After undergoing a successful femoral-popliteal bypass surgery, our client's large leg incisions were transferred from the ICU to a hospital floor where the protective surgical dressings were removed and not replaced. While bedridden and suffering from severe diarrhea, her open wounds became contaminated after repeated episodes of stooling in bed.
The treating vascular surgeon later acknowledged the wounds should have remained covered and confirmed the contamination caused the infection. As the infection rapidly worsened, our client developed a necrotizing soft tissue infection and sepsis, requiring emergency surgeries, wound debridements, wound vacuum therapy, prolonged hospitalization, IV antibiotics, and transfer to a long-term acute care facility.
As a result of the infection, our client endured months of severe pain, repeated wound procedures, physical impairment, prolonged rehabilitation, and ongoing medical treatment.
