What Happened
Our firm successfully resolved a medical malpractice case involving a retained surgical sponge left inside a patient's arm after surgery. Following what should have been a routine procedure, the patient developed ongoing pain, bleeding, drainage, and a serious infection that continued for months before the true cause was discovered.
A second surgery revealed that a surgical sponge had been left behind during the original operation despite documentation stating sponge counts were correct. The retained foreign object caused infection, required additional surgery, wound care, rehabilitation, and prolonged recovery.
